In this volume Charles Mountain supplies at least one scripture paraphrase and/or "theme hymn" to go along with existing hymn tunes for each Sunday and major festival in the Revised Common Lectionary for all three cycles.

The lyrics follow the theme for the day and help to provide an integrated worship service for the congregation.

The hymn-canticles in this collection may be used as hymns in their own right, or as lyrical substitutes for the scripture readings. When used as hymns they are most effective as the hymn that either precedes or follows the sermon to underscore the theme of the day and of the worship service.

An index lists the hymn-canticles by books of the Bible and Mountain also provides an index for "theme hymns."

Charles M. Mountain, a resident of Denver, Colorado, holds B.A. and M.A. degrees in Music from California State University at Northridge and an M.Div. degree from Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota. He concentrates on the musical and liturgical aspects of ministry and has written extensively for journals and programs such as The Hymn; A Journal For Congregational Song (The Hymn Society in The United States and Canada), God In Music Glorified (a weekly one-hour classical music radio commentary), and Each In Context (a seven-part weekly series broadcast during Lent on Public Radio).
